BNI operatives in Kumasi are reported to have visited the home of the immediate past Chief Executive Officer of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sylvester Asare Owusu Monday morning, to invite him to assist in investigations.
It is not clear for what Asare Owusu is being investigated, but sources claim they are not football-related.
Asempa Sports’ sources said the embattled CEO was just out of bed at about 8:30am the operatives visited and he asked to be given time to get ready and to consult his counsel.
Other sources told Myjoyonline that Asare-Owusu was hinted of the invitation last Thursday, while his then employers, Manhyia, was also notified.
Asare-Owusu has since March this year been recommended for prosecution by the Marshall Belieb Committee set up by the Minister of Youth and Sports which investigated the deaths of four soccer fans at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi during a league match between Kotoko and Hearts of Oak on February 8.
The deaths were said to be the cause of suffocation from excessive heat from the overfilled stadium.
The Committee further recommended a five-year ban from football administration for Mr. Asare Owusu who was also accused of pocketing part of the gate proceeds from the ill-fated game won 2:1 by Hearts.
On Saturday, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, owner and life patron of the Kotoko, dissolved Asare-Owusu’s management following a string of poor results in the ongoing Glo Premier League and instituted an interim team.
