Headline sponsor of the Black Stars, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation has denied doubling the team’s Africa Cup of Nations winning bonus.
Media reports indicated that GNPC had increased the bonus from $5,000 to $10,000 after the players rejected the initial $5000 dollar flat rate offered by the Youth and Sports Ministry as rather meager.
But the Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, Alex Mould in an interview with Joy Sports said the reports are false.
According to him, their contract with the Ghana Football Association to sponsor the Black Stars, forbids them from interfering in such matters
“The GNPC package is quite simple. We take care of the coach’s salaries and the friendly games they play,” said Mr. Mould.
“We do not take care of the bonuses of the Black Stars; that is the prerogative of government however, if GNPC is called to support the Black Stars in any way we will dig deep and go to our board and our board will most likely give approval for us to support them in any way.
“But our package with them remains the same, we have not had a conversation with the Ministry on this and as far as we know, that is being handle at the Ministry level.”
