Mr. George Pentsil, the Zonal Officer of Food and Drugs Board (FDB) in charge of the Western and Central Regions, said the Board would identify and withdraw unwholesome energy drinks from the market in the two regions.
He said the FDB had strict guidelines on industrial foods and other consumables and manufacturers who would flout such standards, would have their products banned and withdrawn from the market.
Mr. Pentsil in an interview with GNA in Takoradi on Tuesday said some energy drinks do not meet industrial specification and contain high caffeine that was harmful to human health.
He explained that caffeine was consumable but its excessive use or concentration in food or drink products could cause adverse reactions.
Mr. Pentsil said though the Board had established standards and specifications, some manufacturers had deliberately flouted the rules in order to make maximum profits and advised the public not to depend so much on energy drinks.
