Upper East CEPS destroys contraband goods

The Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) in the Upper East Region on Thursday, burnt a quantity of confiscated goods estimated at about 112 million Cedis. The items, which included assorted foreign cigarettes, fake and expired pharmaceutical drugs, mosquito coils and Chinese herbal tea, were seized at various entry points in the Region by CEPS personnel over the past four years. Mr. Joseph Kusi-Aidoo, Chief Collector in-charge of Preventive in the Regional CEPS office, told newsmen at the disposal site at Sherigu near Bolgatanga that most of the products, particularly the pharmaceutical drugs, originated from Nigeria and lacked vital consumer information such as manufacturer and expiry dates. He cautioned traders in the area against the importation of contraband goods from Cinkasse in neighbouring Togo, saying, it would be impounded by CEPS personnel at the borders. Present at the destruction site were officials from the Food and Drugs Board, Environmental Protection Agency and the media. Source: GNA
