The first ever paragliding festival in the Volta Region has been launched at Likpe Todome. This makes the Volta region the second region after the Eastern region to host the sport which promises to be a major boost of tourism in the highly mountainous communities of Likpe within the Hohoe Municipality.
The Likpe mountains and the Likpe Ancestral caves have remained one of eco-tourism sites in the Volta region but have not attracted so much attention.
The event drew people from different parts of the country and the world together to a great spectacle of flying moments of excitement by patrons. The mountains which serve as a border between Ghana and Togo was a centre of attraction as people of both countries converged to celebrate the yuletide in grand style amidst borborbor and brass band music.
Tourists from different parts of the world trooped to the Likpe mountains on boxing day to participate in the sport hailed by many as the beginning of a dawn of tourism in the area.
The paragliding festival was a local initiative championed by former National Security Coordinator Col (rtd) Larry Gbevlo Lartey who hails from the area.
The event was honoured by the presence of the Volta Regional Minister Helen Adjoa Ntosso and her family, Former Attorney General Obed Asamoah and many other dignitaries.
Helen Adjoa Ntosso promised to partner the developers to fix the road leading to the site up the Likpe mountains, which makes it difficult for ordinary cars to climb the mountains. Even 4×4 cars had to be assisted by drivers who are very conversant with the terrain.
She said, "This is the first time and what we want to do is to partner the developers to work on the roads so that more people can get access to this place".
Comparing the Likpe Paragliding festival in the Volta region with that of the Eastern region, Helen Ntosso said “even with this it is better than what I know is at Kwahu Atibie. I know how that looks like and I think this is perfect".
The site has three take-off points and three landing sites.
According to Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey (rtd), plans are far advanced to install cable cars between the mountains. “We already have an arrangement with some guys to come and put up cable cars from down there to the top of that hill there. We know that that is going to help. They have given a bill of about three million dollars. The local organizing committee is looking at that, and you know that is going to require some bank financing and what not; so it's been discussed. We have those arrangements. They have brought all the drawing. But I know that any bank that sponsors that thing will not regret it," said Larry Gbevlo- Lartey.
The proximity of the Likpe mountains to the Wli waterfalls and the Mount Afadja, the highest mountain in Ghana, makes it an ideal location for further eco-tourism potentials.
