Fire Service certifies Accra Mall workers

Officials of the Ghana Fire Service say workers at the Accra Mall are well-equipped to manage any fire outbreak that may occur at the mall. The service on January 20, 2009 conducted an intensive fire-fighting training programme for workers of the mall as part of its national campaign to equip the citizenry with the needed skills to manage incidents of fire outbreaks. The Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Greater Accra Regional Commander of Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Mr Agyarko Attobrah, speaking to Joy Business News in an earlier interview said the service is taking steps to reduce fire outbreaks in the country. It also hopes to train as many people as possible to manage incidents of fire outbreaks. Officials of the service said the latest training programme at the mall comes after several other collaborative efforts with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to train pupils and students in fire tendering. Meanwhile managers of the Accra Mall said the training programme afforded them the opportunity to enhance the fire-fighting skills of the workers of the numerous shops at the facility. The newly constituted fire warden department at the mall is to detect and prevent the occurrence of fire outbreaks, evacuate shoppers and other occupants to an assembly point in the event of fire. Marketing Manager of the mall, Moses Louis told Business Report safety precautions are needed to ensure maximum security because of the large number of people who visit the mall. The GNFS says it plans more collaboration in future to ensure a more protected country.
