Former President Jerry John Rawlings of Ghana and Nigeria’s former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, were among five persons honoured on Sunday by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for their contribution to the growth of democracy on the continent.
The others were former President Festus Gontebanye Mogae of Botswana; Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, former President of Sierra-Leone while former Prime Minister of Spain, Jose Maria Aznar, was honoured for his immense love and support for the African continent.
Otumfuo who bestowed on Rawlings the title of 'Agyewodin,' decorated all five in rich kente cloths, and presented them with citations on emerald plaques that eulogized their individual traits and contributions to democracy.
The occasion was a grand durbar held at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi to climax festivities marking the 10th anniversary of Otumfuo’s coronation as Asantehene.
Among dignitaries to witness the event were President J.E.A. Mills; former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama; Chief Justice Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood; Sir Gabriel Igbenedion, Esama of Benin State of Nigeria; Lady Julia, wife of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II; former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings; ministers of state and members of the Diplomatic Corps.
