Government will in the next five years invest a total of GH¢ 2 billion in the production of electricity in the country. This is geared towards improving the quality of services in the production and supply of electricity across the country. This was revealed by Energy Minister Joe Oteng Adjei at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday. Asked where the government will raise the amount, the minister said with the goodwill the government is currently enjoying, it should be possible to raise such an amount over the five year period. The minister hinted a reduction in government subsidy on electricity tariffs consumption in the country. According to the Public Utility Regulatory Commission government currently spends GH¢1.52 million per month in subsidising electricity in the country, a phenomenon he said does not augur well for the country. He said electricity consumers must be prepared to pay more for every unit of electricity consumed in exchange for quality service delivery across the country. The Electricity Company of Ghana and the Volta River Authority are to benefit GH¢ 1 billion each from the proposed investment. Meanwhile, officials of the Electricity of Ghana have attributed a trip in the generation units at Akosombo for the total black-out that engulfed residents in Accra and Tema.
