GJA demands Asaga apology

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has demanded that Mr. Moses Asaga apologises to Mr. William Jelula, a Chronicle reporter, who was assaulted by some NDC supporters on Saturday, April 11, 2009. The statement which was signed by the Upper East regional Secretary of the GJA, Mr. Benjamin Glover also demanded that Mr. Asaga pay 800 euros for the replacement of the damaged Olympus digital camera which got spoilt during the scuffle. This he said will help maintain a good relationship between him and the media. The reporter was taking pictures of NDC supporters assaulting another man for wearing an NPP 'T'Shirts during an NDC programme. The supporters re-directed their anger on the reporter and allegedly destroyed his camera. The report says Mr. Asaga who saw Mr. Jelula being beaten refused to stop the perpetrators until he finished giving a speech before ordering his driver to take the victim to hospital. In a subsequent interview with peacefmonline, the president of the GJA, Mr. Ransford Tetteh said Mr. Asaga had already apologized to Mr. Jelula, but did not disclose whether the 800 euros had been paid or not. The reporter was invited by Mr. Asaga to cover a victory rally organized by the NDC in the Upper East region. The GJA statement described the act as senseless. He added that what happened goes contrary to chapter 12 of the 1992 constitution which guarantees the freedom and independence of the media. Source: Peacefmonline
