The government will soon undertake a major restructuring of the Narcotics Control Board to make it more effective and efficient in fighting drug trafficking in the country, the Vice-President, John Dramani Mahama, has stated.
He did not indicate when the restructuring would take place, but said that the board would be put under a new management and adequately resourced to operate better in accordance with modern standards.
The move is part of measures being pursued by the government to "stamp out the drug trade" in which Ghana is being used as a transit point, he explained.
At a meeting at the Castle in Accra, with a Spanish government delegation led by Bernadino Leon, Secretary-General of the Spanish Presidency, Mr Mahama said Ghana is serious about the war on hard drugs.
"We need to address the logistic needs of the board to operate more efficiently in the fight against the drug menace," he stressed, adding that more sophisticated scanners would be provided for use at the ports to ensure that the traffickers did not outwit the security systems.
In addition, he said sniffer dogs would be deployed to complement the work of the drug enforcement officials at the ports.
Vice President Mahama called for assistance from other countries towards the purpose, saying Ghana would be glad to receive any form of support from Spain.
On his part, Mr Leon said the Spanish government appreciated the friendly ties with Ghana, and commended Ghana for its progress in various areas of the economy.
Also at the Castle to call on the Vice President to discuss bilateral issues, was a Canadian delegation, led by Datren, the Canadian High Commissioner in Accra.
