The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Force Commander, Major Gen. Claudio Graziano, has commended the Ghanaian contingent for maintaining a tradition of dedication and professionalism in the implementation of the UNIFIL mandate.
Maj. Gen. Graziano was addressing a durbar of Ghanaian soldiers in Southern Lebanon to mark their Medal Presentation Day, according to a statement by the Public Relations Directorate of the Ghana Armed Forces in Accra on Saturday. A high powered delegation led by the Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peace keeping Training Centre, Maj. Gen. J.K. Attipoe represented the government during the parade.
The Force Commander expressed gratitude and appreciation for the immense contributions the Government and people of Ghana have made in ensuring international peace and security the world over. He applauded all ranks of Ghanbatt 69 for their zeal, professional efficiency and determination to succeed, in spite of the challenges.
Presenting the UNIFIL Medals to the troops on behalf of the UN Secretary General, Maj. Gen. Graziano reminded the soldiers that the award of the medals symbolised the UN's gratitude and appreciation to all troops for their sacrifice for peace in Lebanon. He urged the troops to wear the medals with pride and continue to maintain the highest qualities that they have set since the commencement of their tour of duty in Southern Lebanon.
Maj. Gen. Graziano also commended the humanitarian assistance programmes of Ghanbatt 69, which included holding regular medical and dental outreach clinics in their area of operations and assistance through the provision of English and computer teachers. Maj. Gen. Graziano congratulated the Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. S.M.T Osabutey for showing exemplary leadership during his tour of duty and for ensuring the enviable standard of excellence attained by the battalion.
