UEW staff elected President of GUSA

A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics Education of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Dr. Ernest Kofi Awanta, has been elected President of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA). The election of the officers for a four year term of office took place at the Association’s 95th General Delegates Congress held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Dr Awanta polled 15 votes out of the 33 delegates to beat his closest contestant, the incumbent Mr Aloysus Denkabi of the University of Ghana, Legon who had fourteen votes (14) with Dr. Kojo Afedzie Asamoah, a Bio-Chemistry Lecturer at University Cape Coast obtaining four votes (4). The president-elect in an interview with GNA Sports at Winneba on Sunday promised to exhibit a high sense of excellence in leadership and will ensure holistic development in University Sports. Dr Awanta said the time has come for all irrespective of their professional disciplines or class in sports to help champion the cause of GUSA in raising future leaders for the country. He also promised to use his tenure of office to promote sports for all stakeholders by providing dynamic and quality leadership and also implement GUSA’s programmes to the latter and build a culture of team spirit among member institutions. The president pledged to seek sponsorship packages in his efforts to help ensure a formidable Association and hoped members of GUSA would explore all avenues to enable it generate the needed financial resources to support its programmes. Dr Awanta who is also the Chairman for Amalgamated Sports Club at UEW said his new position as President of GUSA will not only impact greatly on the activities of UEW Amalgamated Sports but also on the performance of students in the Department of Mathematics Education where he is a Senior Lecturer. He said his vision has ensured that Frank Boateng, one of the level 300 students who plays for Sporting Mirren, a Premier League Club, has been invited into the national team and he is currently among the squad participating in the ongoing CHAN 2009 in Cote d’Ivoire. The president-elect expressed sincere gratitude to all those who made it possible for him to be elected as President for GUSA and called for their cooperation and support to ensure success of Association.
