Gyan backs CAF for sticking to AFCON schedule

Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has lauded the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for their decision to go ahead with the Afican Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2015 tournament despite fears over the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

Morocco have pulled out of hosting the tournament after fears of the Ebola virus that has taken over some African countries.

CAF have subsequently banned Morocco from participating in the tournament and are currently searching for a new host country for a tournament set to kick off on January 17.

Gyan, in contrast to the position held by many African players and football administrators to postpone or cancel the tournament, believes the decision by CAF to go ahead with the tournament is in the right direction.

“This is the time we need to support and see how to control the disease [Ebola]. If our brothers and neighbours are having this problem, this is the time we need to support them and not to neglect them.

“For me, I think the African Cup should proceed, it has to be played whether in Morocco or anywhere. I heard stories about cancelling the tournament and I don’t think it is a good thing to cancel the tournament".

He said the apporirate thing to do is to support the countries that have been affected by the disease and prevent it from spreading even more than it already has.
