Personnel from Tema Regional Police Command have arrested 95 suspected criminals including a woman in a major swoop to rid the region of miscreants at the weekend.
The police team including personnel from the Region, Police Headquarters and National Security retrieved a pistol, large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and wrappers of whitish substances also suspected to be cocaine.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) John Kudalor, Tema Regional Police Commander who briefed the media on Monday said while 30 of the suspects were rounded up in Tema township, the remaining 65 were accosted at Ashaiman.
He noted that 25-year-old Adam Damatta, the woman among the suspects was arrested in Tema Manhean for selling “wee bitters” also known as “under” (an alcoholic beverage mixed with Indian hemp) to the criminals to undertake their operations.
Thirty-two wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and four bottles of “wee bitters” were retrieved from her.
DCOP Kudalor said two armed robbers, Haminu Moro alias Lion 27, and Nuumo Holy 22, were arrested at Adjei Kojo near Ashaiman on Friday after robbing a woman of her GH¢200.
He said the two suspects on a motor bike attacked the woman after a spy had informed them of the victim’s transactions at a bank in Ashaiman municipality.
DCOP Kudalor said the suspects who were escaping were crossed by a flock of goats which resulted in an accident leading to the arrest of one of them by residents while the other was apprehended by the police patrol team who retrieved a pistol and the money from him.
He said Nuumo Holy who was on the police criminal list was discharged three months ago from police cell for a similar offence when no evidence was found against him.
DCOP Kudalor said the suspects would be screened and those found culpable prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.
He called on the public to volunteer information to the police and gave the assurance that the exercise would continue to ensure safety of residents, workers and tourists in the Region.
DCOP Kudalor urged the public to observe simple security advice from the police and desist from discussing their activities especially bank transactions with people.
