The captain of an oil tanker is being interrogated by the police in connection with the suspected murder of a member of his crew - the third in command of the ship.
Seventeen other crew members on the ship, MT Counti-Guinea, which is flying the Liberian national flag, are on bail. They have, however, been confined to the hotel housing them.
Briefing the Times yesterday, ACP Joshua T. Dogbeda, Tema Regional Police Crime Officer, said Ivanov Yuring, the captain, was being held as leader of the crew for the death of Jerry Bacolod Villancerran, 51, whose body was found floating in the sea at Tema.
ACP Dogbeda said Villancerran was last seen on the ship on Febrdary3, and following concerns raised about his whereabouts, a search was conducted on the ship by police but to no avail. The body was later found floating on the sea.
He said two deep cuts were noticed under Villancerran's left breast, raising suspicions of foul-play.
The Regional Crime Officer said an autopsy conducted at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital confirmed that he was killed and dumped into the sea.
