The Most Rev Dr Justice Ofei Akrofi, Anglican Bishop of Accra and the Primate of the of West Africa, has bemoaned the high corruption in the country, emphasising that the highest form of corruption is the lackadaisical approach of Ghanaians to work.
“Most Ghanaians often report to work late and close early and yet receive their full salaries at the the month," he stated in Accra on Sunday when he spoke as guest speaker at this year's Bible Sunday which climaxed the annual Bible Week celebration.
The theme for the week-long celebration organized by the Bible Society of Ghana was “Peace and Stability for National Growth, the role of God’s word.”
Rev. Akrofi, who is also the president of the Bible Society of Ghana, disagreed with the notion that politicians are the most corrupt in the country.
"We often deceive ourselves that it is only politicians who are corrupt," he said and stated, "by their attitude to work, non-politicians are more corrupt."
He said accusations of corruption had been levelled against governments over the years, and stressed that everybody needed to play his or her part in fighting the canker.
Rev. Akrofi noted that the lack of moral conscience accounted for the absence of growth and development in the country.
He also expressed concern about the lack of diligence on the part of workers.
“Things disappear from offices, people demand for weight or an envelope before a personal file is retrieved while people work for hours less than expected of them but are paid," he complained.
The bane of Africa's development, he said, was the problem of corruption and the lack of vision and stressed that efforts should be geared towards addressing those problems.
