The much-anticipated national congress of the Ghana Athletics Association faces a possible delay over a legal tussle.
Former chairman who is standing against incumbent Professor Francis Duodu, George Lutterodt has headed for the law court to sue Commonwealth medalist and national triple jump record holder, Andrew Owusu who doubles as an executive member of the GAA ,for defamatory remarks.
Andrew Owusu who was an athlete under George Lutterodt's 4-year tenure between 2001 and 2005 openly questioned the credibility and performance of Lutterodt and added he was involved in Visa racketeering. “There was a huge visa racketeering scandal at the GAA. I think people have forgotten. It’s not an allegation.
I actually personally suffered under that,” “It happened under his watch and as guardian of the GAA he must be held responsible at some level. Lutterodt was a very detached chairman.
Even simple team selection, he did not know how to do it. Have you heard of such a thing happening in the last four years?” Andrew Owusu he told Accra-based Radio Gold in an interview at the weekend.
In reacting to the allegation George Lutterodt who was appointed as chairman between 2001 and 2005 says his person has been maliciously maligned and denied any involvement in Visa Racketeering and confirmed to JOY Sports he had sued the Former Athlete for defamation.
"I have sued him for damages against my person, against my character, damages ,they have defamed my character, Am a consultant everybody will now look at you twice and say is this the man who is involved in the Visa something? You destroy my hard earned reputation because of this .Am going to have my day in court against Andrew and I will ensure he never does this to anyone "he intimated
The Ghana Athletics Association national elections is scheduled for November 15, and George Lutterodt says he will insist on justice even it means a delay in the National elections.
"Let's say I was to win this thing will still dangle, I have to clear my name and even if it means appealing to Court to postpone the Elections I will "he added.
