Alhaji Ahmed Iddrisu Adam, Acting Northern Regional Secretary of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has advised workers to acquaint themselves with labour laws, especially Act 651 of 2003, to promote work place relationship.
Alhaji Adam explained that it was necessary for every worker to know the labour laws, so that they would not indulge in acts that would infringe on work place norms that could cause them their dismissals, he told the GNA in an interview in Tamale on Wednesday.
He explained that, the new labour law, Act 651, is a consolidation of all pieces of labour laws in the country, some of which had been in existence since independence.

He said workshops were organized in 13 districts in the Northern Region in the past two years, with funding from the BUSAC Fund to educate workers about the labour law, Act 651 of 2003.
The districts are, East Mamprusi, West Mamprusi, Savelugu/Nanton, Tamale Metropolis, Tolon/Kumbungu, West Gonja, Nanumba North, Bole, East Gonja, Yendi, Zabzugu/Tatale, Saboba and Gushiegu Districts.
He said before the introduction of the new labour law, several laws existed but workers had no access to them, hence the need to organize workshops and open forums on radio to explain the law to them.
He said some GTUC leadership in the past embark on guess work to address labour problems, and explained that after the release of Act 651 of 2003, leadership of the TUC were now in the position to address workers’ problems.
He commended the BUSAC Fund for the enormous support it had given to strengthen the TUC in the Northern Region, to enable them to educate workers on labour issues.
Alhaji Adam expressed the hope that problems associated with workers with regards to their employers would be addressed amicably.
