Parliament investigates ‘haunted’ chair saga

Parliament has appointed a three-member committee to investigate reports that a piece of traditional concoction had been fixed beneath the chair of the Minority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu. The new parliament was greeted with grim reports of the exploit of supernatural powers in the House ostensibly to outwit political opponents. The Minority Leader is said to have felt very uncomfortable in his new seat which hitherto belonged to the now Majority Leader Alban Bagbin. Mr Mensah-Bonsu is said to have filed a complaint with the estates department of the House which expressed shock at the revelation. Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament Mr Ambruce Derry told Citi FM reporters that Mr Mensah-Bonsu nearly fell off from his chair on the January 7, first day of sitting of the new parliament. According to him, a day before the Minority Leader made the complaint he had discovered additional alterations to his chair, creating suspicion that someone could have been up to some mischief. The Daily Guide’s publication in January 19 reported that a close examination of the Minority’s chair had revealed that it had “badly been tampered with and the black-coated iron part that joins the seat to the stand, removed and replaced with a very bright sparkling lead.” “The cover cloth beneath the chair had also been removed and replaced, but sown with a needle and thread, giving it a completely different look. “An inspection of the chairs in the Chamber revealed that only Hon. Kyei Mensah-Bonsu’s chair had this strange metal fixed beneath it,” the paper reported. The Majority Leader Alban Bagbin on Thursday decried what he said was the rather poor security in the house. He wondered why the chamber fitted with closed-circuit cameras could have been invaded by some unscrupulous persons without such persons being noticed. Experts who examined the chair said it could have taken a minimum of three days to complete the kind of alteration that had been done on it. The investigative committee appointed by the Speaker, will submit a report detailing how the seat of the Minority Leader could have borne the alterations. Story by Fiifi Koomson
