IGP grateful to president Mills

The outgoing Inspector-General of Police, Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong has expressed gratitude to President Mills for not sacking him immediately after assuming office. Addressing a news conference in Accra, Mr. Acheampong said the patience exhibited by president Mills indicates he is a good leader. The IGP and the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier-General J. B. Danquah have been asked by the president to retire. Mr. Acheampong says he is not disappointed by the president’s decision. “There is no greater height one wants to achieve in this profession than the very top.” He said while in other countries the very first thing new leaders do is send heads rolling, president Mills had the patience to take stock before deciding to make changes. Mr Acheampong expressed the hope that the president will continue to support the police to enable them maintain peace and security in the country. Former president Rawlings had called on president Mills to send the two top security chiefs packing. He claimed the two were using their positions to arbitrarily transfer persons sympathetic to the NDC. Following the comments, the two were asked to leave. But spokesperson for the president, Mahama Ayarigah said the dismissal of the two had nothing to do with the comments of the former president. He said moves had been initiated to replace them before Mr. Rawlings’ call. From tomorrow, Mrs Elizabeth Mills-Robertson will act as IGP. Story by Malik Abass Daabu
