Six persons remanded at Nsawam Prisons, have complained to the circuit Court at Asamankese about the lack of medical care for them. They alleged that the prison authorities often ignored the request of prisoners for medical attention. Abraham Asakiah, remanded at the Prison, for defilement and who had been in custody since June 2008, complained to the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Siame that he was sick but the prison authorities refused him medical treatment. This was after the court had adjourned his case to February 9 and ordered that he should be sent back to custody. Asakiah, a barber at Akwatia was charged for defiling a 10-year-old primary school girl in June last year. Five other remand persons who were in court, also complained of lack of medical care for them and the Judge ordered the investigator to investigate the allegations and report to the court at the next sitting. The Judge said prisoners were entitled to medical care and should not be denied that fundamental human right. Source: GNA
