Ghana’s Black Queens are in action on Sunday against their counterparts from Algeria at the 2014 African Women’s Championship in Namibia.
Coach Yusif Basigi’s girls are hoping to excel at the tournament after poor campaigns in recent times. After group stage exits in 2008 and 2010, the Queens failed to even make the cut for the immediate previous tournament in 2012.
Being in the same group with Cameroon and South Africa as well, the Black Queens must dig deep in order to resume their position as a top side on the continent.
Coach Basigi is benefiting from several juvenile groups who have played at various World Cup tournaments including Mercy Myles, Samira Suleiman, Edem Attevor and many of their cohorts.
The tournament began on Saturday with Nigeria defeating Ivory Coast 4-2 in a six-goal thriller.
Ghana, who have been three-time runners up will be hoping to finish in the top three in order to make it to the World Cup in Canada.
