Vice President John Dramani Mahama has asked Christians to examine whether Christianity have influenced society in any way.
He was speaking at an induction service in Accra on Sunday for the newly elected executives of the Ghana Pentecostal Council (GPC). Apostle John Annan Adotey, President of the Apostolic Church of Ghana, has been elected President of the Council.
He succeeds Apostle Dr. Michael Ntumy, former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost (COP) who left office last year.
The Vice President said, addressing issues such as abortion, gay marriages, safe sex, capital punishment and other moral and ethical issues required collaboration between government and religious bodies to do so.
He called on churches to do more to address such vices and to work at building a more united nation for development.
“We all have a call to duty to build this nation, irrespective of any political divide. There is more
that unites, than divide us,” Mr Mahama added.
In his acceptance speech, Apostle Adotey, 63, pledged to adhere to teachings of the Bible and the constitution of the GPC to implement and develop ideas in order to achieve the objectives of the Council.
He thanked his predecessors for a good work done in making the GPC a great force at both home and abroad.
Apostle Adotey said God was looking up to GPC as a force for spiritual, economic and political change, but the task was enormous in view of current increase in social vices.
“God expects us to do aggressive evangelism to reach the unsaved. Our focus therefore should be obedience to the great commission of going into the world to make disciples of all nations”, the President said.
Apostle Adotey therefore, appealed to all churches to continue to support the GPC to make the desired impact on the entire citizenry.
Apostle Adotey is a product of Aggrey Memorial School, Cape Coast, University of Cape Coast and the John Haggai Institute, USA.
He is a former Head of the Ghana National Office of the West Africa Examinations Council and has served the Apostolic Church in various positions such as National Witness Director, District Apostle and Pastor of Kaneshie District.
He is married to Rebecca with two children, Timothy and Lucy.
The GPC also inducted Bishop Agyin Asare, founder of the World Miracle Church as First Vice President, and Reverend Dr William Dontoh, General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church as Second Vice President.
Other members of the GPC National Executive Council include Apostle Dr Opoku Nyinah, Chairman of COP, Bishop Nii Tackie Yarboi of the Victory Bible Church, Reverend Sam Korankye Ankrah, Royal House Chapel, among others.
The GPC comprising Pentecostal and charismatic churches was formed 1969 to unite the family of Christ and encourage the maintenance of high Christian standards and principles.
