Power struggle in Police Service intensifies

Barely four days after the swearing-in of President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, the struggle as to who becomes the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) has begun in earnest. Seven experienced names have already come up for the enviable top position in the Police Service. Sources close to the Police Headquarters and government grapevine indicated that as at Saturday, seven names have come up for consideration for the position of IGP, with two of them appearing as tops on the list. They are Paul Quaye, Commissioner of Police in charge of Research and Development, DCOP A1hassan, Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP John Kudalor, Tema Police Commander and Dr. K. K. Marfo a retired Police Commissioner. The rest are DCOP Patrick Timbilla, in charge of operations, DCOP Adu Gyimah in charge of Technical and Services and DCOP Dr. Peter A. Wiredu, Commissioner in charge of Administration. COP Paul Quaye is said to be a honest person who rose through the ranks as a career Police Criminal Investigator to the position of Commissioner over the years, with a personal relationship that makes him the toast of many that he comes into contact with. He is among the top contenders for the position according to sources.. DCOP Dr. Wiredu, on the other hand, also-rose through the ranks as BNI investigator to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), and has just completed his Doctorate degree in Law, in London. A Police source told this paper that his Report writing is second to none in the service, and that he joined the service with National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) certificate, but studied hard to his current position. The source added that owing to Wiredu's experience and dexterity on the police job, almost all the IGPs preferred to work with him as staff officer and is considered among the lot to bring sanity into the police administration. DCOP Adu Gyimah, is in charge of Technical and Services at the Police headquarters and considered a hard worker who can handle the position of lGP very well. DCOP Alhassan the Western Regional Commander, was highly tipped for the position but sources indicated that in the heat of the runoff he transferred District Police officers who were perceived to be NDC sympathizers from strongholds of the party. Although, he was a preferred candidate for the position, this new tag has become an albatross on his neck and he has to prove beyond reasonable doubt to get the post, the source said. DCOP John Kudalor Tema Police Commander is also tipped to ascend to the position of IGP owing to his dedication to duty but he said to be "too faithful"" to the current IGP. Good old Dr. K. K. Marfo retired Police Commissioner who was tagged NDC by the NPP administration and forced to retire from office is in contention for the IGP as well. He has a record that makes him capable of weeding out armed robbers from the system. DCOP Patrick Timbilla, in charge of operations, is another good material for the IGP and bas his ambition stalled by bias alleged statement that the NDC was doomed to remain in opposition for many years to come. The source pleaded with President Prof. Mills to maintain Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Ken Yeboah, who is a hard worker and liked by all and sundry in the Police Service and that he could help the new IGP to bring sanity into the Police Service. It said, because the IGP has two years to go on retirement, he can be useful at a different position, following the Justice Georgina Wood's Cocaine Committee probe, which mentioned his name as having close relations with cocaine barons.
