Some hoodlums within the ruling National Democratic Congress have declared war against members of the New Patriotic Party residing at Agbogbloshie market in Accra.
The situation has forced over 90 members of the NPP to seek refuge at the party’s campaign office at Asylum Down, while some of them have escaped at the peril of their lives to the northern region, where many of them hail from.
According to the ‘refugees,’ the NDC hoodlums have threatened to kill them should they encounter them anywhere.
Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle, the NPP leader at the Agbogloshie Market, Mr. Mohammed Kamil Ahmed (Nazo) mentioned the names of the leaders of the thugs as, Mohammed Ayatu, Swala, Adams and Razak.
He continued that just some few days before the first round of the general elections, the NDC members began threatening that they were going to wipe out all the notable NPP supporters in the area, but he treated the threat as a joke.
"On a certain day, Mohammed met me at a spot in the area and told me that if NDC wins they were going to kill me, but I did not treat it seriously," he stressed.
He complained to the NPP parliamentary candidate in the Odododiodoo constituency, Mr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, who also advised them to lodge a formal complaint with the Old Fadama Police Station, which he did.
"Even when the Police cautioned them to desist from such acts, they were still saying in our Dagbani language that they were not going to abandon the threats and that they will surely carry out the threat," Nazo maintained.
He said, during the December 7 elections, the NPP Polling Agents complained to the party leadership in the area that they were being threatened by NDC supporters.
He said the threat continued until he left to cast his vote in the Northern region during the runoff.
"The threats became so intense that I went to buy a ticket for my wife to go to the North, she was supposed to depart at 11 A. M. on Saturday, January 3, just about the same time Dr. Afari Gyan, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission declared NDC as winners of the election, at exactly 11 :05AM. "It was around that time when I received a call from my brother that the NDC people have razed down my house, together with my other colleagues," he said.
He lamented that he returned from the lorry station to find out that his property had been destroyed, and a chilling message that he should run for his life.
He concluded that they had to seek shelter at the party campaign office, because already one person, Sulemana Alhassan, has been killed adding that fresh, complaints had been lodged at the Old Fadama Police Station.
The Spokesperson of President John Atta Mills, Mahama Ayariga said they were not aware of the development and that they were going to deal with the situation.
