Thank you very much. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let me so also apologise for keeping you here for a very long time.
Emm, as you are all aware, we have been meeting with the representatives of the political parties trying to iron out some difficulties over the results of the presidential run-off election which was held on the 28 of December.
We were trying to do so in the hope that we will be able to finally declare the winner of the run-off election.
Emm, I think you will recall that serious concerns were raised over election results first in Kumasi in particular, but in other parts of the Ashanti Region.
We have also been informed by the NPP that it has serious concerns over some of the results from the Volta Region.
We have always said that the name of the game is evidence and today the NDC provided some evidence that would indicate the need to audit some of the results of the elections in the Ashanti Region and NPP has promised to do same in regards to some of the results from the Volta Region.
Emm as a result of our inability to fully resolve the differences over the election results and secondly in view of the closeness of the results, the votes obtained by the two candidates, we have decided on two things. We will give you copies of the results but let me give you an indication as of the results as at now.
We have collated results from 229 out of the 230 constituencies. And the results are as follows: Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, 4, 478, 411, this represents 49.87 per cent of the total valid votes cast. John E Atta Mills 4, 501, 466, representing 50.13 per cent of the total valid votes cast.
You must remember that for circumstances as we say in Ghana beyond our control, we were unable to hold the elections in the Tain Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.
The results are so close that the result of the Tain Constituency could affect the eventual winner. So we have decided that the election in Tain will be held on Friday, what is the date, yes, this coming Friday, that will be the 2nd January, I am right and that hopefully will make it possible for us to determine the ultimate winner.
In the mean time we have agreed that serious investigations into the alleged inconsistencies in the results from the Ashanti Region, and if evidence is provided, also from the Volta Region will continue.
And the outcome of these investigations will be factored into the final determination of the winner.
So ladies and gentlemen, as at now Prof. Atta Mills is in the lead but as we said the difference is such that the result of the Tain election could make a difference so we have decided to run the election of Tain on Friday. Thank you very much, Thank you very much.
