New Edubiase gave Ashgold a run for their money, but the Miners eventually subdued them with a 2-1 victory at the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium on Sunday in a coronation match to declare the latter winners of the 2014 top-4 tournament.
GHALCA, the organizers of the competition, quickly settled on the Edubiase lads to replace Hearts of Oak, after they had boycotted the final replay over change of venue.
The game, although couldn’t have changed the fact that Ashgold were going to be declared champions, was played very competitively, with the home team breaking the deadlock through their South African import Tetrun Shitenbi, before the Eric Fordjour drew level for New Edubiase.
Back from recess, fullback Augustine Sefah scored the match winner to electrify the stadium with much jubilation from the teeming fans of the Miners, who trooped to the stadium to watch their darling club win their first ever top-4 title.
The final of the competition ended one all at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, last week Sunday and all the stakeholders settled on a replay instead of penalty shootout, but Hearts of Oak wanted it to happen in Accra.
However the Phobians appeal for the replay to be staged in Accra wasn’t considered, which called for their withdrawal from the tourney, hence the organizers had to settle on New Edubiase to engage Ashgold in a coronation game to crown them champions of the tournament.
The Obuasi based club defeated, the league champions Asante Kotoko 2-0 on aggregate, during the home and away knock-out games to progress to the final.
