A group of jubilant supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party are said to have besieged the headquarters of the party to celebrate their flag-bearer’s lead in the presidential polls.
The report comes a few hours after supporters of the opposition NDC swarmed the Osu Kuku Hill campaign headquarters of the party in jubilation over what they claim to be an NDC victory.
Both the NPP and the NDC have claimed victory ahead of the Electoral Commission's official declaration, even though the official result was yet to come from the EC.
In an earlier appearance on Joy FM’s election 2008 analysis programme, Election Headquarters, communications director of the NPP said results trickling in from around the country guarantee the ruling party a first-round victory.
An analysis of provisional results from 203 constituencies puts the NPP’s Akufo-Addo in the lead with 3,787,963 ballots representing 49.69 percent of valid votes.
The NDC’s Atta Mills trails with 3,611,849 votes, representing 47.38 percent of valid votes.
With 27 constituency results yet to come, it is still not clear who would win the elections, the most competitive in the history of the country.
Out of 170 of 230 seats counted for the parliamentary ballots, the NDC has secured 82 seats with the NPP at 83.
