1. Rinse your hair
Admittedly, using beer as a hair wash may leave you smelling like an O-week party, but it’s worth it for the added shine and volume. Plus you can use any kind you like. Have a lone beer in the fridge that nobody likes the look of? Let your thirsty locks soak it in.
2. Remove stains
Perhaps you’ve spilled your cup of coffee onto your new carpet? No problem. Pour some beer onto it, let it soak into the stain and leave it to sit for a few minutes. Dab over the area with a towel, then wash with soap and water and your stain will be gone.
3. Fertilise your plants
If you’re not sure what to do with that half-empty bottle, give your garden a drink. Flat beer makes a great fertiliser for thirsty shrubs and plants and its sugar will help your garden grow lush and green.
4. Stop the slugs
Fed up of finding these garden pests sneaking around on your hard-grown plants? These slimey creatures are attracted to the smell of yeast, so pour a little beer into a bowl they can crawl into (but not out of) and they’ll gravitate towards the “slug pub”.
5. Take a beer bath
Add a few drops of your evening beer into a bath and enjoy the aroma as it soaks into your skin. Just as with wine, beer contains antioxidant properties that will leave your skin looking great.
6. Enhance your food
Beer makes a great marinade for all types of meats, leaving the cut tender without impeding the flavour of the meat. Adding beer into stews and chilli dishes will also help to enhance the flavour of the meal.
7. Fix a stomach ache
If your stomach hurts, a sip of beer may not be the first thing you think of. However, its fizz can help to soothe an ailing tummy, similar to drinking aginger ale or lemonade when you get the rumbles.
8. Sleep better
As the old wives’ tale goes, if you wash your pillowcase in beer, you’ll fall asleep faster. However, there must be something to it – Gregg Smith, author of The Beer Drinker’s Bible (Brewers Publications) says that women come into his brewery to buy hops so they can “sew it into pillows”. The smell is said to work as a sleep aid, especially for colicky babies.
9. Make fluffy batter
If you want to make your breakfast pancakes extra fluffy, add beer in place of the milk or water. The bubbles in the beer and the yeast will help to raise the pancakes, making them airy and thick.
10. Build a house of beer
OK, so this one doesn’t involve the actual beer – you have to use it first, then recycle. Beer bottles are used to colourful effect in the walls of many homes, and not only is this a savvy recycling technique, it makes for a crafty-looking home, too.
