The Northern Regional Police Command has assured the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) it would investigate allegations that the Chereponi constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Grunsah is stockpiling arms in the town.
The police gave the assurance when the northern regional chairman of the NDC, Alhaji Sumani Zakari, led a six-member team of party faithful to officially report the allegation.
AlhajiGrunsah has been accused of was piling arms to destabilise the December polls in the constituency.
According to officials of the NDC, the NPP chairman in the constituency was said to have told the chief of the Chereponi that the NPP was securing arms to defend members of the party against possible attacks on December 7.
He alleged that an NDC official who was present during Alhaji Grunsah’s disclosure then reported the matter to the police, who have since failed to effect the arrest of the party chairman.
Alhaji Sumani said the regional police command may have to act swiftly to retrieve the weapons, as failure could trigger bloodbath in the constituency.
The police however assured the NDC that the regional command would prevail upon the Yendi Divisional Police Command to investigate the allegation and bring the perpetrators to book.
Meanwhile the NDC parliamentary candidate for the Chereponi constituency, Seidu Issah, later at a news conference said members of his party in the constituency feel intimidated as the police seem to be acting rather slowly.
He said the latest development in the constituency point to a possible violence and vote rigging in the polls, a situation he describes as unfortunate.
