The Ghana Health Service, GHS, has warned of a possible outbreak of a deadly type of meningitis in the south.
The disease has been prevalent in the three northern regions and parts of the Brong Ahafo Region.
Even though there are many types of meningitis some of which are already in the south, the Director General of the GHS, Dr. Elias Sory says this is specific and more deadly.
In an interview with Joy News’ Araba Koomson on Friday Dr. Sory explained this type of meningitis affects the brain and the spinal cord, adding, it comes in the form of an epidemic.
According to him, the disease is spread through bacteria in the drier regions, and with the change in climatic conditions, those in the south are at risk of being affected.
Dr. Sory, therefore cautioned the citizenry to take preventive measures to avoid being attacked by the deadly disease.
He advised persons with symptoms such as headaches, fever, neck pains and momentary loss of consciousness to visit the medical centres for immediate attention.
Even though the disease is curable, he explained, any delays on the part of affected persons could be very deadly.
