The Trades Union Congress (TUC) is calling for affirmative action to give women equal representation at all levels in the workplace.
According the TUC a quota system should be introduced in certain corporate positions to correct the current imbalances.
The labour movement organized a seminar to mark International Women's Day on Thursday and its Deputy General Secretary, Kofi Asamoah told journalists women had long been discriminated against on the job market in Ghana.
He said the TUC had on its own adopted a gender policy directed at ensuring that women attained higher positions in the union and believes a lot more needs to be done to ensure it is also possible in public institutions.
He said times had changed and there was therefore the need for reorientation to get all to appreciate that men and women at the workplace needed to be given same opportunities.
He said the ideal thing would have been to let men and women compete on an equal footing, however owing to several intervening factors that have resulted in the current wide imbalance, an affirmative action was what was needed in the immediate.
