A 42-year-old mason, Alfred Biney, who stole iron rods valued at GH¢1,800 belonging to his employers, was on Monday slapped with a fine of GH¢200 by the Asamankese Circuit Court.
Biney pleaded guilty and the Judge, Mr Kofi Akrowiah said he was giving him a lighter punishment taking into consideration the fact that he had been in prison custody for a week and for showing remorse at his trial.
Giving the facts of the case, Police Inspector D. T. Nartey told the court that, Biney worked for Synbeck Company Ghana limited, which was engaged in the construction of a two-storey block for the Asamankese High School.
He said on October 18 this year, a supervisor at the site detected that about 35 iron rods have been stolen.
Inspector Nartey said, an informant who took particulars of the vehicle which was used to transport the iron rods helped the police to track down the culprit. The Informant saw, one Ofori Kwadwo Asiedu collecting the iron rods onto a Nissan violet truck with registration number WR 657 N on October 18, 2008.
Chief Inspector Nartey said the supervisor and the manager of the Company lodged a complaint with the police and Asiedu was arrested.
Asiedu admitted conveying 10 pieces of the iron rods to the house of one Nana Anim upon the instructions of Biney.
Asiedu later led the police to arrest Biney, who took the police to retrieve 10 of the iron rods.
The prosecutor said the remaining 25 pieces of the iron rods could not be traced.
