The President of Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong is calling for more efforts to be concentrated on developing the North as part of ensuring equitable distribution of the national cake.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa News, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong noted that northern Ghana holds the key to country’s development prospects.
According to him, it is shocking to hear that a third of the entire country is under-developed. He said it is welcoming to hear from candidates of various political parties contesting the presidential election pledging to establish funds to develop the North.
Nana Dwomoh Sarpong stated that, all the major rivers in Ghana take their source from the north, yet there has been little effort towards irrigating the lands to ensure an all-year cropping.
In a related development, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong who is also a Board Member for the Water Resources Commission is urging government to use every available means to reduce slums in the country.
He said reducing slum settlements is one of the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals which Ghana has committed herself to.
He affirmed that no human face should be applied when evicting slum dwellers from unauthorized places especially areas close to major drains. According to him Ghana may not achieve the set targets if she fails to control the upsurge in slum settlements in the country.
