Historic kidney transplant at Korle-Bu

The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is performing an historic kidney transplant, the first of its kind since the hospital was established 85 years ago. Three patients would be operated upon between now and the end of November, including a Ghanaian woman, identified as Juliana. According to Joy News report on Monday, one of them is currently in theatre. A medical team from Buckingham University and an international medical charity organisation, Transplant Links Community (TLC) leads the surgery with support from the Ghanaian team. It is not clear whether kidneys which are in high demand internationally were sourced locally or imported. Each surgery is expected to cost between $25,000 and $35,000 Chief Executive of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Nii Otu Nartey, told Joy News that journalists would be fully briefed on the transplant on Thursday. In Ghana it is estimated that one of every ten persons may have kidney problem.
