Police finger NDC in Berekum clashes

Police in Berekum have accused supporters of the National Democratic Congress of instigating last Sunday’s violent clashes which left at least seven people injured including a police inspector. Supporters of the New Patriotic Party, and the NDC were engaged in a battle of stone pelting after both parties ended a mini rally in the constituency. Divisional police commander Mr. Obeng Mensah told Joy News’ Israel Laryea that the NDC had no permit to organise any rally in the vicinity on Sunday. Even though suspects have been identified, Mr. Obeng said none has been arrested despite several attempts by the police. According to him the parliamentary candidate of the NDC Stephen Oppong Mensah has agreed to assist the police to arrest the suspects. In a response, Stephen Oppong told Joy news, the NDC is a law abiding party with the responsibility of ensuring peace in the upcoming elections. He says the party will work with the police to arrest the suspects. “We went to the police to lodge our complaint, but we were told the NPP have been there already and listed names of people they claimed were behind the violence. We therefore told the police to hand over the list to us so we will try and bring them.” Mr. Oppong however maintained that the clashes were provoked by the NPP. According to him, supporters of the NDC on their way home from a football tournament were ambushed by some disgruntled members of the NPP. Author: Nathan Gadugah
