Leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have began another round of accusations following violent clashes between supporters of the two parties in Berekum.
Even though no serious casualties have been recorded, reports say, bill boards of candidates were vandalised and set ablaze.
It is the NPP who are leading the onslaught, accusing supporters of the NDC of ignoring police orders and unleashing mayhem.
To avert any clashes, Constituency chairman of the NPP Kwame Kankam, said the police advised the NDC not to hold any political activity because the NPP had secured permits, but this was ignored.
He told Joy news’ Matilda Asante that NDC orchestrated the whole attack on his supporters who had closed from a mini rally and were going home.
“They loaded their campaign vehicle with registration number GT 2709R with stones and gravel just to cause mayhem and confusion.”
Well armed, Kweku Kankam claimed the NDC flouted the police order not to move into the NPP crowd and began pelting NPP supporters with the stones.
“When they got to the point where the NPP were, they decided to pass through the crowd, the police said no and then they started pelting us with the stones.” He narrated.
He says the NDC pulled down four bill boards belonging to Nana Akufo-Addo which they set ablaze.
But these allegations were vehemently dismissed by the NDC.
Referring to the allegations as a “blatant lie” Stephen Oppong the NDC parliamentary candidate told Joy news there was no political event, adding that he had rather organised a football match to harness talents for the local teams.
On their return from the match, Mr. Oppong alleged that supporters of the NPP after their rally had laid ambush waiting to attack NDC supporters.
“They attacked our supporters with stones,” he added.
Asked whether his supporters burnt down NPP bill boards Mr. Stephen Oppong said he was not aware.
Meanwhile attempts by Joy news to seek independent opinion proved futile as the police in Berekum were in a meeting ostensibly to find lasting solutions to the recurrent political violence that has engulfed the constituency.
Three weeks ago, the regional office of the NDC in Berekum was smeared with human faeces, with accusing fingers pointing to the NPP.
The police have begun investigations into the matter, but are yet to make any arrest.
