Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flag-bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described as barbaric the politics of ethnicity being embarked on by some politicians ahead of the December 7 elections.
He said ethnic politics defied the principles of democracy, which hinged on unity and peace, saying such practices also threatened the harmonious co-existence and social cohesion among the varied ethnic groups in the country.
Nana Akufo-Addo was addressing an NPP rally at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Lorry Park in Kumasi, on Wednesday.
He appealed to Ghanaians to resolve to reject politicians who preached ethnicity because they were fomenting trouble and division to derail the nation’s focus of building and strengthening its democratic dispensation.
Nana Akufo-Addo said it behoved on politicians to be pre-occupied with what they could offer the nation for the total well-being of the citizenry.
He noted that it was totally out of place for anyone to embark on ‘backward politics’ at this crucial stage of the nation’s history instead of consolidating peace. On education, Nana Akufo-Addo promised that the next NPP Government would invest in education at all levels because education holds the key to the realization of Ghana’s dream of reaching a middle-income status by 2015.
“The next NPP Government is determined to eliminate illiteracy at all levels to enhance the country’s socio-economic development,” he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo explained that the Asian Tigers were able to achieve economic breakthrough due to their coherent and consistent educational policies, programmes and interventions over the years.
“We can achieve the same with the right policies by government and commitment by non-governmental organizations and corporate bodies.”
