Former President Jerry John Rawlings has charged the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to take the persistent victory the party, in the Volta Region for granted.
He told them not to ever make the mistake of taking the good faith that the people of the region had kept with the party even in turbulent times under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for granted.
The former President said this when he paid a courtesy call on the chiefs and traditional authorities of the Peki Traditional Area as part of his tour of parts of the Volta Region.
Prior to his arrival, there were reports of groups that had demonstrated against his presence at Peki but the chiefs and traditional authorities distanced themselves from these after which he addressed a large gathering of the party faithful and sympathizers at Peki-Blengo. .
"Even in the midst of hunger, suffering and total neglect under the NPP administration, the good people of the region have still held on to that integrity and we must not make the mistake of taking that for granted", he stressed.
He took a swipe at the NPP administration for throwing freedom and justice to the dogs and placing the people of the country under servitude, adding that "life without freedom and justice is not worth living".
The country, he observed, was crying for true sons and dedicated patriots to serve it but the NPP was doing all to suppress such true sons of the land.
"We need men of decency to steer the affairs of the nation. The NPP has no fear of God. They have made more money for themselves than the state", he said.
According to him, the moral standing of the nation had gone so bad that it was for the same reasons that some generals had to die in the past, adding: "How long are we going to continue dying just to enjoy basic freedom?'
The country, he said, was on the verge of collapse because of the mistake Ghanaians made in bringing the NPP to power.
"I respect elections. I respect the right of choice.
Now you've seen the results of your action", he said, adding that the NPP had taken the democracy in the country for granted and had succeeded in reducing a good number of Ghanaians to third and fourth rate citizens.
"It is time to correct the mistake that we made as a people. God has shown us all the kind of people they (the NPP) are. It's about time we voted them out and sent them back to the political wilderness", he stated.
The aspiring Member of Parliament for the South Dayi Constituency, Mr. Edem Asimah, described the NPP as a party with no affection for the poor of this country.
He described them further as self-conceited people bent, on making personal gain at the expense of the state and its people. He asked they be voted out.
A legal practitioner and high-ranking member of the NDC, Mr. Chris Ackummey, for his part, said the NPP had discredited the achievements of the NDC but were taking credit for the same achievements of the NDC.
He described the NPP as a group of people with no conscience to understand the suffering of the masses to sympathise with them. .
"Such people cannot be allowed to rule us again. It is high time we chased them out", he urged.
