Ghana will play host to at least 16 presidents and heads of state as well as a good number of other high profile dignitaries during the peak of celebrations of 50 years of her nationhood.
Presidential Press Secretary, Andrew Awuni on Monday told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah that the tall list of no less than 16 presidents include a good number from the continent.
He was contributing to the radio station’s update of the Golden Jubilee celebrations dubbed Ghana@50 series.
He said “Most of them are from the continent of Africa. We have from Algeria President Bouteflika, we have from Zambia, we have from Namibia, we have from Zimbabwe, we have from the Comoros, we have from of course the neighbourhood... Obasanjo, we have Blaise Campaore ... yes over 16 Heads of State have so far confirmed.”
Andrew Awuni said the Duke of Kent who would also represent the Queen would be coming as well as Baroness Amos, the Head of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Head of the Agricultural Development Bank, the World Bank and IMF and other heads of global institutions.
Then from the West will come major delegations of the leadership of France, Korea, China and Japan and others and “the city of Accra is going to be flooded by all these leaders.”
Andrew Awuni said the delegations are expected to arrive in the country any moment from now, assuring that accommodation and other facilities were all ready to properly take care of the august visitors.
Monday was on the official calendar of Ghana@50 celebrated symbolically as Ghana’s Golden Homecoming Day where the state was expecting to receive the African-Diasporan family and other international guests.
The year-long celebrations peak on March 6 when Ghana became independent of British colonial rule.
