At least four people sustained severe injury when supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed in the Northern Region.
Even though no death has been reported yet, Joy FM’s Northern Regional correspondent, Mahama Shaibu, described the incident as serious.
He said the NDC’s supporters went to Kpatinga near Gushiegu to hoist their flags in the community; supporters of the NPP also went to the same area using the same route to ostensibly hoist their flags.
Misunderstanding ensued between supporters of the two leading political parties, in spite of calls by their respective leaders to live in harmony, and they started throwing stones at one another.
What started as a heavy stone petting spree, degenerated into a real fight with both factions resorting to the use of machetes to inflict wounds on the opponent.
However, it was not clear, which party’s supporters started the attack.
