Kasoa Carnage: Death toll increases

One more person is reported dead from Sunday's accident on the Accra-Weija road, bringing the toll to five. Two others are still on admission at Korle-bu Intensive Care Unit A Benz bus on Sunday run into street hawkers in his attempt to dodge traffic, killing the four on the spot and injuring several others. The injured were rushed to the Kasoa General Hospital, but had to be referred to the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital due to the seriousness of the injuries. Joy Fm correspondent Kweku Obeng Adjei told Joy news’ Matilda Asante that the additional death was a young man who had been brought from the village to assist in raising some money to help his folks at home. His brother (name withheld) says it will be difficult breaking the news to his family in the village. Meanwhile the hawkers have taken time off their usual businesses to protest the death of their colleagues. They are calling on the police to expedite investigations into the cause of the accident, and deal ruthlessly with the driver whose negligence resulted in the death of their colleagues. The hawkers have also been soliciting for funds from drivers and other road users to pay the bills of those on admission. One of the hawkers in an interview with Kweku Obeng Adjei conceded their business was risky but said they were not going to stop, adding that it was the only way to raise money to pay their school fees and other expenses. She called on government to provide them with alternative jobs in order for them to vacate the streets. The police appear to be making headway in arresting the driver of the Benz bus who absconded after causing the accident. Inspector John Nimpong of the Weija District Police has confirmed the arrest of the owner of the Benz bus to assist in investigations. Author: Nathan Gadugah
