President John Mahama has called for investigations into Ghana's disastrous showing at the World Cup in Brazil resulting in the first-ever exit in the group stages.

President Mahama told journalists at Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana football "must look at the team again" and "do a post mortem" to "see what went wrong and fix it".

Portugal consigned Ghana to a 2-1 defeat and an early exit in a match which analyst say was there for the taking. The performance branded listless saw Ghana concede an own goal.

Ghana lost 2-1 to US and drew 2-2 against Germany in its Group G fixtures.

The team needed to beat Portugal by a two goal margin and hope Germany beat USA. Germany held their side of the bargain but the Black Stars disappointed despite a $100,000 cash payment hours before the game.

Off-the pitch incidents saw Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng sacked from the camp.

Weighing on the national disappointment, President Mahama said Ghanaians should pick themselves up and rebuild from the ruins of defeat.

He said Ghanaians can comfort themselves in the knowledge that Ghana played the best game at the World Cup against Germany.

"Football takes a lot. It takes discipline, hardwork, training and also good luck. Unfortunately luck was not on our side".

Commenting on the team, he said blending new breed of players and old players can be a difficult exercise.

"We need to look at the team as a whole. I guess when the FA comes we need to set up a kind of committee to look at the whole system of what happened in Brazil 2014 right from the preparation to the World Cup to when they went to Brazil and what happened in Brazil. We need to do a whole post-mortem."

"There will be other World Cups for Ghana", he said and called for the rebuilding of the team to start immediately.
