Ms Rosemary Quarm, the controversial New Patriotic Party firebrand, has blasted the Women and Children’s Affairs Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama, describing lobbying by groups supporting her candidature for the party’s running mate slot as shameful.
Ms. Quarm says even if the party was looking for a woman to occupy the position, there was no convincing reason for Nana to choose Hajia Alima because she cannot add any value to the fortunes of the party.
Speaking to Adom News, Ms. Quarm said Hajia Alima came from nowhere but has been awarded a ministerial position, adding that she should be satisfied with that and not look for more than she can handle.
She threatened; “Look if she wants us to say what we know about her, she should dare me and we shall see”.
Ms. Quarm is leading a group of women who are kicking against a female running mate, arguing that if even Betty Mould Iddrissu could not get the nod from the NDC, how come Hajia who is nowhere near Betty should desire to partner Nana Addo.
The woman who is best remembered for quashing the presidential aspirations of NPP bigwig, Mr. Kwame Pianim who tried to contest the NPP flag-bearer post in 1992, said she would deal with Hajia if she insisted on contesting.
Another member of the NPP women opposing a woman-flag-bearer, Hajia Fati, said that they have never seen what she described as despicable display of interest in the history of the party and called on the party to call Hajia Alima to order.
She asked the minister to resign from her position to contest for the running mate if that is what she wants. “She cannot dictate to the party, only the presidential candidate is on the ballot paper”
The group asked the National Executive Committee of the NPP to reject the minister if her name comes up as Nana Addo’s choice.
Hajia Alima’s office has meanwhile rebutted the claims by Ms. Rosemary Quarm and her group, saying that the so called NPP women are angry because Hajia exposed one of them who duped some supporters of the party of millions of cedis.
As for Ms. Quarm, the office said she has never liked Hajia Alima, adding that her comments are not surprising.
Nana Addo is expected to name his choice on Wednesday.
