The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a painful 2-1 defeat to US in the second Group G game at the 2014 World Cup in Natal, Brazil.
A late John Brooks header restored the American lead after Dede Ayew pulled level late on in the second half.
Within seconds of the blast of the whistle, Clint Dempsey scored the fastest goal in the World Cup after he beat John Boye and struck it low and hard to beat Kwarasey in post for the Black Stars.
It was a crucial goal for a side that had always conceded first against Ghana in the previous two World Cup outings. They were determined to rewrite history and did that in magnificent fashion.
The Black Stars, after the early upset lifted up their game in a desperate search for an equaliser but it was the Americans who came close to increasing the tally with Altidore right there in the thick of things. His feeble shot was blocked by the outstretched legs of Boye.
In the 32nd minute Asamoah Gyan advertised a superb shot which forced a great save from Tim Howard in post for the Americans.
Deep into added time, Jordan Ayew had easily the greatest opportunity to pull level for the Black Stars but his connection from a Christian Atsu cross left much to be desired.
The Black Stars returned from recess the hungrier of the two sides pressing from all angles but the Americans were resolute in defence.
Gyan came close to scoring but his header from a superb Sulley Muntari cross went wayward in the 54th minute. The Al Ain striker later forced a magnificent finger tip save from Tim Howard with another header six minutes later.
Kevin Prince Boateng who came in for Jordan Ayew combined well with Kwadwo Asamoah on the left but Christian Atsu later curled the ball just wide. The Stars pushed more men forward in a desperate search for the equaliser but the Americans sat back and tried to catch the Stars on a counter.
Kwadwo Asamoah later whipped in an immaculate cross but missed Gyan's head narrowly. Dede Ayew could not also connect as the US defenders cleared the ball to safety.
The two attackers would later combine to get the much needed equaliser for the Black Stars. Kwadwo Asamoah initiated the attack on the left and played with Dede Ayew. The Marseille player spotted the run by Gyan and laid the pass to him. Gyan served a cheeky back heel through the legs of his marker before Ayew connected with his cultured left foot for Ghana's equaliser in the 82nd minute.
The Stars' jubilation was cut short four minutes later by Brooks who soared above his markers to connect a corner kick for a famous US victory against the Black Stars.
The defeat leaves Ghana in a precarious situation and need a crucial victory against Germany in their second Group G game before they can nurse any realistic hope of qualifying from the group.

2349 Ghana win a corner kick and its taken deep. Essien soars up to head but straight to the head of the US defender.
2347John Bruce restores US lead with a header from a corner kick. Goal!!!!!!!
2343 Ghana gets the equaliser and its Dede Ayew who strikes with his left after a cheeky Gyan heel. Its a goal!!!!!!
2339 Dempsey the goal scorer tries a little shot left.
2336 Kwadwo Asamoah whips in cross which misses the head of Gyan and Ayew fails to connect. Still the US defend their solitary goal.
2332 Michael Essien comes in for Rabiu Mohammed.
2329 US win another corner which is taken across the face of goal but Kwarasey misses it rather dangerously but there is nobody to connect.
2322 Great combination by Kevin and Kwadwo Asamoah and a pass is laid to Atsu who tries a little curl but the ball inches wide. Kevin came in for Jordan Ayew.
2318 Another teasing cross from Opare on the right and Gyan leaps well to connect but Howard dives and tips the ball away for a corner kick.
2316 Sulley Muntari locates Gyan with a great cross but Gyan's header goes over the bar. The Black Stars are beginning to ask lots of questions from US defence.
2312 Christian Atsu cuts in deep from the right but his shot goes wayward.
2310 Gyan wants a penalty after a little tussle with his marker in the 18 yard box but the referee would have none of that.
2307 US brings the second half underway. Gyan takes a knock seconds later after beating three US players.
2250 Referee brings the first half to an end.
2248 Ghana win a corner kick and its Christian Atsu who converts. Well defended and the US will break. John Boye tracks back to defend. He sends a great ball to Atsu on the right who locates Jordan in the 18 yard box but Jordan's lame kick denies Ghana the much needed equaliser.
2244 US win a freekick which is taken but Kwarasey punches it for a US corner.
2040 US break on the right side of attack a cross is whipped in but Ghana's defence deals with it well enough.
2032 Asamoah Gyan advertises a powerful shot after shoving off a challenge but Howard pulls off a superb save to deny Gyan the equaliser.
2220 Altidore appears to have pulled a muscle and is taken off.
2218 US get the opportunity to increase the tally after a quick break on the right. A cross to Altidore but his connection too feeble as Boye and Mensah all defend well.
2214 Black Stars lift up their game in a desperate search of the equaliser. Great ball to Gyan but Tim Howard is quick enough to save a sticky situation.
2207 Ghana make an incursion and its a clever cross by Gyan but the US goal keeper saves the situation.
2201 Ghana get game underway and in less than a minute USA are up and its Dempsey. He outwits John Boye before slotting home from close range.
The Black Stars of Ghana take on old foes USA in the second Group G game at the ongoing 2014 World Cup Natal, Estadio Das Dunas stadium in Brazil. Both teams have all to play for in a group that has Germany, Portugal as favorites. Already Portugal have been whipped by group favorites Germany in a 4-0 outing. All eyes are now on the two under dogs.
