The editors of the Palava newspaper have the option of evading any charge if they are to decide not to contest the veracity of their claims against the President. The newspaper’s editors would soon be summoned before the National Media Commission (NMC), the oversight body for the media in Ghana. They would answer questions on a recent publication that has reportedly angered President John Agyekum Kufuor. The publication accused the President of conspiring with some senior Army officers to impose a state of emergency so that he can stay in office a little longer. The President has described the publication as treasonable and has instructed the security agencies to investigate its source. But the security agencies seem to be resorting to the NMC for redress. Speaking to Joy News, the executive secretary at the NMC, Mr George Sarpong confirmed that the commission had received petitions from both the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) rejecting the reports and seeking redress with the commission. He said the BNI petition condemned certain portions of the Palava story that the flag-bearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo had become “unpopular and that has been proven by a survey conducted by the BNI.” The BNI has denied ever conducting any such research and has described the publication as false. It is seeking the newspaper to retract the story. “The Armed Forces on the other hand complain that there has not been any such meeting with the President as alleged in the publication between the President and Military and therefore also consider the publication as false,” Mr Sarpong said. The executive secretary said the commission would go through “the procedures of settlement” to arrive at an appropriate decision on the issue.
