At least one person is feared dead with several others injured, in fresh clashes that have erupted in the Buipe Traditional Area in the Northern Region, police has confirmed.
The clashes begun on Monday morning at a market place, with two feuding chieftaincy factions said to be firing at each other.
The two factions the Denkere and Lebu gates for two years are in disagreement over the rightful heir to the Buipe skin.
Even though the Northern Regional House of Chiefs has ruled in favour of the Denkere gate, with the subsequent enskinment of Mahama Abdulai as the Buipe Wura, the Lebu gate are far from satisfied.
The tussle over who had the rights to collect market tolls and perform customary rights triggered today’s clashes.
Narrating what happened to Joy Correspondent, John Abdulai spokes person of the Buipe Wura, said they were in the market performing the customary rights when the other faction started firing into the market.
“Today is the market day, every Monday we perform customary rights, whilst we were doing that they attacked us and shot into us.”
John Abdulai said the brother of the Buipe Wura was shot but could not confirm if he was dead or not.
However Ibrahim Alhassan spokes person of the Lebu gate, alleged that to allow Mahama Abdulai’s delegation to go ahead and collect the market toll was a recognition of his position as the Buipe Wura which he is not.
Alhassan said they also went to collect the royalties, but the Mahama gate resisted, which degenerated into the clashes.
“We also went there to collect our royalty but his people said they wouldn’t allow and that resulted in the gun fire.”
According to the District Chief Executive of the area,Yakubu Zakaria, a joint police and military personnel have been deployed to the region to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustafa Iddris says he has called an emergency Regional Security Meeting to quickly resolve the matter before it gets out of hand.
