With clear indications that government would still sell 70% shares in Ghana Telecom, in spite of the stiff opposition, workers of the company are jostling for job security ahead of the sale.
The workers claim their expertise would still be needed to keep the company going, the expected sale notwithstanding.
Chairman of the Communication Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress, Mr. David Clottey says “the concern of the buyer should be about how to expand and we insist we have the expertise to keep the system going.”
Mr Clottey in an interview with Joy FM’ Sammy Darko said their concern was to see Ghana Telecom move along with workers insisting “we want to be part of the process. The fact that somebody is coming to buy does not mean we have to go home.”
The interview follows a meeting by the Workers Union with the Deputy Communications Minister, Fred Opare Ansah, over the fate of GT workers.
Even though the meeting was held behind close doors, Mr. Clottey said in the interview that he is hopeful the interest of workers would be considered in the new deal.
According to him, there is no contract binding the new buyer to go along with the workers, but still believes negotiations with the Ministry would help.
He revealed that sections of the sale agreement that concerns the workers had been given to the workers by the minister for consideration and further negotiations.
