Northern women unveil peace plan for Bawku

A group of concerned women from the three northern regions have outlined a ten-point peace plan which they believe will help bring peace to Bawku. The Coalition of Savanna Women for Peace said long curfew hours will not bring peace but rather deprive the people of an opportunity to engage in any meaningful economic activity. The spokesperson for the group, Susan Mahama urged government to endeavour to contain the conflict in Bawku before the December elections. That she said was necessary because even in normal times elections themselves could generate conflicts. “We believe that our father, the traditional rulers and elders of Bawku have the ability to stop the conflict and prevail on their own people to live in peace,” she said. Ms. Mahama suggested that meetings be held with the youth of the factions to discuss the issues and help them to overcome their emotions. She called on politicians not to politicize the Bawku conflict in view of the upcoming elections. The group also exhorted politicians to desist from making inflammatory remarks about the crisis as that could exacerbate the situation. Story by Malik Abass Daabu
