The NPP Parliamentary candidate for the Abuakwa North Constituency, Professor Kojo Amoako has threatened legal action against the party should it go ahead to disqualify him.
He says he disagrees with article 4(2) of the New Patriotic Party constitution which says no member shall be entitled to apply for nomination as an MP unless he qualifies under our electoral laws, adding that the party's legal committee is not interpreting the constitution the right way.
In an interview with Joy News on Friday, Professor, Amoako said he could only be disqualified under the excuse of holding dual nationality if he was elected the Member of Parliament, and not when elected as the party’s parliamentary candidate.“there is a big difference between a member of parliament and a candidate” he stressed.
The legal Committee of the party advised the Chairman Peter Mac Manu to annul the application, vetting and election of Professor Kojo Amoah as the party’s parliamentary candidate for holding dual nationality and making false declaration to the vetting committee.
The ruling by the committee follows 3 petitions sent before it by the sitting MP and residents of constituency.
Even though the professor is yet to get any formal letter of disqualification, he says he will not hesitate to send the party to court.
The NPP General Secretary Nana Ohene Ntow confirmed receipt of the recommendation by the legal Committee but says the National Executive Council is yet to act on it.
